Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd Grades

Mt. Calvary students are exposed to curriculum that is aligned with, but not limited to, the California State Standards.
Teachers utilize multiple teaching strategies to facilitate learning and capitalize upon each child’s unique learning style.

Language Arts:
Phonemic awareness, letter/sound recognition, listening and comprehension, and writing concepts are taught through weekly poems, songs and nursery rhymes. The Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys program is utilized.  Writing is done on a daily basis through journals and interactive, class writing assignments.  Students are also taught correct pencil grip and letter/number recognition and formation using the D’Nealian system of print.

Mathematics:
Mathematics is taught via the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt GO! Math  program, which includes topics such as Sorting/Classifying, Numbers Concepts, Geometry, Measurement, and an introduction to Addition and Subtraction.  Marcy Cook tiles are also utilized for independent skills.

Science/Social Studies:
Topics are left up to the teacher but follow closely to the state requirements.  Small class sizes allow for more in-depth studies and inquiry, as children are encourage to apply concepts to their own personal experiences.

Art:
Elementary has many art activities taught by the teacher, as well exposure to a variety of art styles and media through the Meet the Masters programs, taught by volunteers.  Through this program, children are introduced to all elements of line, shape, color, texture, form, composition, and perspective.
